Piano Playing for Wellbeing

These piano playing sessions are suitable for anyone who is interested in finding an alternative way to express emotions, thoughts and ideas without using many words. The piano is a tool that provides an instant access to musical sounds. Some musical exercises may be used as a starting point and spontaneous playing on the piano is encouraged to explore the unspoken or unknown emotions. No previous musical training is necessary to benefit from these sessions. A session may be non-verbal if that is comfortable, or creative song writing/composiiton may be encouraged to embrace known feelings. Some people may recognise aspects of counselling in these Piano Playing for Wellbeing sessions, this is because both share the use of a safe environment for exploring emotions. In these piano playing sessions, music and sound are the main elements for communication.

After the inital chat, we can agree to meet for an initial assessment session. This is an opportunity for you to find out if Piano Playing for Wellbeing is suitable for you and if you are comfortable with me. Also for me to find out if I can help you. From this point, you can take time to decide if you would like further sessions. You are under no obligation to continue. 

My Approach

I believe everyone can play music. I see music making as a natural part of ourselves and is around and within all of us, and for some they need encouragements to bring it out. You can see in young children who respond to music readily without prompting, for example, they often bob to left or right when they hear music. When they can clap, they clap to music in time. As adults, we are still moved by music, but when it comes to music making, we are conscious about what is right or wrong, or how we should play music. Those concepts may be more suitable when one is learning to play an instrument. Music created in Piano Playing for Wellbeing is for self-expression, for bringing out emotions that are perhaps difficult to say in words. I may provide musical accompaniment to support your playing, listen to your playing or suggest a musical activity for a particular expression. In this non-judgmental environment, my role will be supporting you to feel comfortable in expressing a range of emotions musically. 


Each session is 50 minutes and the fee is £40. Concessions fee is £35. 

Each session is paid for by cash or cheque on the day we meet. 

Cancellation Fees

Please give 48 hours advanced notice if you would like to cancel. If not possible, please pay the full fee.
